"This meeting has been cancelled ..." ANC2C Chair, Doris Brooks
[ See video clip! ]
"This is the wrong thing to be showing as an example to our children.... You can't be ... adults. This is for the people. This is for us. ... whether you're middle class or any class. ... This is not an example for the kids.... This is terrible. It's sad. ... Is there something you want to say that people shouldn't hear? ... It's disgraceful."
— public comment from an African American gentleman who brought his daughters to see and learn how the District of Columbia government is (mis)run.
What does Ward 2 Council Member Jack Evans have to say about ANC2C Chair Doris Brooks cancelling two monthly public meetings in a row for nonsensical and ridiculous reasons that go against the very concept of making these government meetings “public”? Mr Evans needs to be more concerned about his voting constituents in this sector of Ward 2. Government officials like Ms Brooks don't seem to want transparency or accountability in our democratic and free society.
Many individuals in our city have child- and family-care responsibilities, educational study, and work which do not permit them to attend each meeting. Recording meetings allows government officials to reach out and engage more of the constituents they serve.
Mr Evans’ failure to speak publicly on this issue for almost six months suggests his tacit approval of ANC2C leadership behaviour. Good americans speak up against injustice and good public officials, worthy of holding office, speak up for their constituents.
Does Mayor Adrian Fenty have an opinion on this matter?
Does the Honorable Eleanor Holmes Norton, who is a big proponent of the ANC system, think that efforts of American citizens to record public meetings constitute a rational reason for US Government officials to cancel such public meetings?
“This is not a public meeting”
— ANC2C Chair Doris Brooks

AN2C Chair Doris Brooks reacts to public comments by a gentleman who brought his daughters to the meeting.

Brooks receives private counsel from Parliamentarian Leroy Thorpe (the only publicly unelected official on the ANC2C dais) before cancelling the meeting. Most officials serving as Parliamentarian make their comments during meetings openly for the public record. ANC2C02 Commissioner Kevin Chapple (far left) stands with ANC2C02 Commissioner Alexander M Padro.
